A Heart of...Wood?

Updated: Oct 10, 2019

You’ve probably noticed, when looking at a cut piece of tree trunk, that the wood towards the center is darker. This is called the trees heartwood.

As a tree grows, the outer, lighter colored sapwood closer to the center dies. Although it is considered deadwood, it will not rot or lose strength in a healthy tree. In fact, it actually becomes stronger and is essential for a structurally sound tree.
