Care For Some Wasp With Your Fig?

There's a popular rumor that the crunchiness of figs is partly due to the fact that there are dead wasps in them.

Fact: Technically there is at least one dead wasp in most of the figs we eat.

But don't give them up just yet! Fig wasps lay their eggs in male figs (the ones we don't eat). If they accidentally get into a female fig (the ones we do eat), they can't lay their eggs and die. However, the figs produce an enzyme that breaks down and absorbs the dead wasp.

So worry not, the crunchiness is only from the seeds.
